Dr. Lake is a Board certified psychiatrist and has lectured at national and international symposia on non-conventional and integrative mental health care. After completing residency training at Stanford he was an attending physician at the Stanford Center for Integrative Medicine where he helped establish integrative mental health services. Long-standing interests include the role of culture in mental illness, and philosophical issues in medicine and integrative medicine, and intention in healing. Dr. Lake is a student of herbal medicine, Chinese medicine, qigong, EEG biofeedback. He is in private practice in Monterey, California and continues to serve on adjunct clinical faculty at Stanford. Dr. Lake co-chairs the American Psychiatric Association’s Caucus on Complementary, Alternative and Integrative Mental Health Care.
Dr. Lake has published articles in peer-reviewed medical journals, and book chapters on integrative medicine and psychiatry. He contributes a regular column on integrative mental health care to Psychiatric Times, and serves on the review boards of Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, and the Journal of the Association for Advances in Philosophy, Psychiatry and Psychology. Dr. Lake is the author or editor of three textbooks on non-conventional mental health care: Chinese Medical Psychiatry: A Clinical Manual, (with Bob Flaws), Blue Poppy Press, 2000; Textbook of Integrative Mental Health Care, Thieme, 2006; and Complementary and Alternative Treatments in Mental Health Care (co-edited with David Spiegel), American Psychiatric Press, 2007.
